The monarch’s visit was meant to foster the unity and development of the Yoruba people Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the ooni of Ife visited Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in a bid to foster the unity of the Yoruba people.
The monarch has been at the forefront of uniting the Yoruba people as he said a week ago that God had instructed him to do so. The ooni made the visit to the All Progressives Congress chieftain’s house in the Ikoyi.
It was reported that the ooni’s visit which was made in company of some chiefs was meant to fulfill an agenda of the monarch which was uniting the Yoruba race.
An aide to Tinubu said: ‘‘The Ooni visited him on Monday. It is not meant to be a media thing but we do not know who released the pictures to social media.” The monarch reportedly pleaded with the APC leader to use his influence to bring unity and regional integration in the south west.
Tinubu on his part applauded the monarch for his visit and pledged to do everything possible to bring development and unity to the Yoruba race.
It would be recalled that the Ooni rewrote history on Sunday, January 17, when he became the first Ooni to visit Oyo town since 1937, a move that was applauded by most Nigerians.
Obasanjo visits Ooni
Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday visited the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife to pay homage, where he, in traditional Yoruba fashion, prostrated before Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, his host.
The international statesman, who stepped in with other prominent personalities, was received by prominent traditional rulers in Ile-Ife. Some of those present during the visitation were Dr. Femi Okunnu; Femi Majekodunmi; Chief Oyewole Faseye; Ayo Balogun and many other distinguished Yoruba personalities.
His action was applauded by some of those present during the visit, who were surprised that he could so humble himself before the foremost Yoruba king.
Referring to the Ooni’s recent visit the Aalafin of Oyo and Awujale of Ijebuland among others, as a way of ensuring unity, Obasanjo expressed support for the move by Oba Ogunwusi to unite all Yoruba monarchs.
He insisted that the unity move by the Ooni was important for the progress of Yorubaland and urged the Ooni not to relent in his endeavour to ensure unity, adding that Ife remained the source of Yorubaland.
According to the former President, “I commend the role of Ooni in ensuring peace in Yorubaland. Continue what you are doing, especially your unity course. I am happy with the move taken so far.
“It is only a sign of honour for the Ooni to visit anyone. That does not stop Ile-Ife from its position in the history of Yorubaland.”
Obasanjo subsequently prayed for the progress of Ife and Yorubaland and apologised for not being present at the Ooni’s coronation.
In his remark, the Ooni expressed appreciation for the former president’s visit, describing his guest as a lover and promoter of the Yoruba culture.
